For much of Friday’s Fast Five 225, Kyle Busch and Kevin Harvick offered NASCAR fans at Chicagoland Speedway a preview of racing to come Sunday in the Chase for the Sprint Cup opener.

Austin Dillon, however, stole the show with a late surge past the NASCAR heavyweights to win his second Camping World Truck Series title this year and fourth of his career.

“Those Cup guys, those are the guys you want to beat,” said the 21-year-old Dillon, who drives for Richard Childress Racing. “It’s the biggest win of my career.”  Chicago Tribune

With the win, Dillon moved to within three points of leader James Buescher, who finished 11th. Just seven races remain in the season.

“The main thing for us is to just win races; that’s the only thing you can do to lead in this points deal,” Dillon added.

Dillon also ended Kevin Harvick Inc.‘s four-race winning streak in the series. Harvick won at Pocono, Michigan and Bristol during the month of August, while Ron Hornaday Jr. took the checkered flag two weeks ago at Atlanta.

“I knew they [Dillon’s team] were going to do the opposite of what we did, but we had 20-something laps on those tires. and I had a vibration start to pop up,” Harvick said. “We just had to put four tires on. We wanted to win the race, but we didn’t want to blow a tire.” MiamiHerald.com

Harvick had led 99 laps by the time he came to pit road for his final stop on Lap 129 of 150.

Harvick took four tires, a decision necessitated by a vibration Harvick’s truck picked up during a green-flag run of 42 laps. That decision allowed Busch (who pitted on Lap 130 and took two tires) and Dillon (who came to pit road on Lap 131) to cycle out ahead of Harvick.

As Busch and Harvick battled for the second position, Dillon began to pull away, opening a lead of more than 4.7 seconds over Harvick with seven laps left. NASCAR.com

Harvick’s teammate, Nelson Piquet Jr., finished third, followed by Parker Kligerman and Kyle Busch, who had won the previous two races at this 1.5-mile track.
