Brian Scott capitalized on a late-race pit strategy to win the AAA Insurance 200 on a day when tires wreaked havoc for several Camping World Truck Series drivers at Dover International Speedway.

During the 10th and final caution for separate accidents involving Kyle Busch and Colin Braun, Scott and crew chief Jeff Hensley elected to stay on the track and inherit the lead, while several of the leaders pitted for new tires.

“We knew we weren’t going to pit,” Hensley said. “We had a decent truck.”

Scott’s old tires held up for his first career Truck Series victory in his 39th start. The Boise, ID native led only the last 14 laps in the race that was postponed one day due to rain.

“God, it feels great, it’s been a long-time coming,” Scott said.

Scott became the 10th different winner in as many truck races at Dover. He also joined Scott Speed as the drivers whose first wins in the series came at the one-mile track. Speed won here one year ago.

It just wasn’t Busch’s day at Dover on Saturday.

Busch dominated the race with 133 laps led. While running in front with 17 laps to go, he slapped the wall after his tire exploded. Busch had complained of a vibration before the incident. He ended up finishing ninth. Miami Herald

He also survived the tire woes that derailed the efforts of series points leader and Ron Hornaday Jr. and Kyle Busch. Busch had his shot at a win in the Nationwide Series race earlier in the day blown because of tire issues. He was running up front in the nightcap when he felt a vibration in the rear of his truck and smacked the wall with 17 laps remaining. Busch led 133 of the 200 laps, yet finished ninth.

Dennis Setzer had a season-best second-place finish in the caution-filled race pushed back to Saturday because of rain Friday. The 10 cautions were one shy of the Dover trucks record.

The 21-year-old Scott won in the No. 16 Toyota for the first time in 39 career trucks races. Driving for Xpress Motorsports, the win lifted Scott into fifth in the points standings.

“I watched all those tires blow. It’s kind of scary,” he said. “We just had a balanced truck. We weren’t abusing one tire too much.”

He recorded his fourth top-10 finish of the season and led all of 14 laps. The Press Association
