Ron Hornaday is intent on defending his NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series championship and Saturday he served notice he’s not going down lightly.
Hornaday led 113 of 160 laps and led early and late before coming away with a victory in the Camping World 200 at Gateway International Raceway.
Points leader Johnny Benson finished third as his points lead shrunk to 94 points with eight races left in the season.
Johnny Benson, the series leader and also a four-time winner this year, was third, followed by Todd Bodine, Jack Sprague, Erik Darnell, Mike Skinner, Rick Crawford, Colin Braun and Ted Musgrave.
Benson has a 94-point lead over Hornaday, also the 1996 and 1998 series champion, in the season standings.
“I don’t know what to say,” Hornaday said. “This is a lot of fun. I feel like I’m 18 years old again.”
Dennis Setzer, 48, finished second and Benson, 46, the series points leader, took third. Todd Bodine ran fourth and Jack Sprague finished fifth.
“I think we’re back into our little niche we need to be,” said Hornaday, who had watched Benson win four of the previous six races.
Hornaday regained the lead on a Lap 65 restart as he edged past Sprague, his teammate, just after the green flag came out.
The teammates didn’t seem overly friendly toward each other after a caution on Lap 103. Coming out of their pit stalls, Hornaday appeared to nudge Sprague toward a tire barrier and the hand signal Hornaday gave Sprague wasn’t a friendly one.
“I was telling him he was No. 1 again,” joked Hornaday.
