The Magic Mile gave Kyle Busch a chance to show his mastery.
Busch started from the pole and dominated Saturday’s F.W. Webb 175 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, a race in which only six Camping World Truck Series entries finished on the lead lap.
Busch, who led 165 of 175 laps, crossed the finish line 3.816 seconds ahead of runner-up Austin Dillon to post his sixth win in 14 starts this season and the 30th victory of his career. Kevin Harvick finished third, followed by Ron Hornaday and Johnny Sauter.
Busch led the first 130 laps and didn’t surrender the top spot until he came to pit road for tires and fuel on Lap 131. That handed the lead to Dillon, who didn’t pit until Lap 135.
By the time pit stops cycled through, Busch had opened his advantage over Dillon to nearly six seconds. Harvick was running third at that point, more than 12 seconds back. NASCAR.com
“We just had a great truck,” Busch said. “These guys at Kyle Busch Motorsports have done a real nice job. We work as hard as we can with a single-truck team. We’re doing good on the short tracks, but we just need to find more speed on the mile and a half tracks.”
Busch is second on the series’ all-time race winners list. Ron Hornaday Jr. holds the record with 49 career victories.
“We were a second-place truck all day,” Dillon said. “We were trying to figure out what little things we could do to gain on him. We were really close with Kyle on lap times. He was struggling in traffic. That was the only time I could gain on him.”
Dillon’s second-place run allowed him to take over the points lead. He holds a two-point advantage over James Buescher, who finished one lap down in seventh. Dillon won last week’s race at Chicagoland Speedway.MiamiHerald.com
The championship, Dillon said “has been on our mind since the beginning of the year.”
“That’s what we’re all out here trying to do, win the championship,” he said. “I feel like we’ve had a great truck to beat each and every week, we’ve just been beating ourselves a lot this year. We’re finally starting to string some finishes together and we’re really focused on these last six to go.”
Harvick said it would be just as difficult to pass in Sunday’s Cup race.
“I got stuck behind the 88 [of Matt Crafton] there and lost a half a track [to the leader]. We felt like we had a truck capable speed-wise, it’s just really hard to pass.
“Track position is going to be king and hopefully it’s a better race tomorrow.” Scene Daily
