Neither an early race spin nor a loose truck could stop Kyle Busch from winning the North Carolina Education Lottery 200 Camping World Truck Series event at Charlotte Motor Speedway for the second year in a row.

Busch slid sideways but did not hit anything when he was running in the fourth spot on lap 52. He then dealt with a loose truck before saving his best at the end. Busch passed fellow Sprint Cup Series regular Clint Bowyer with seven laps remaining and then held off Bowyer at the finish by 0.32 seconds for his fourth truck win, including victories in the last three races.

“We didn’t have the truck to beat tonight; the No.2 [Bowyer] did,” said Busch, who has won four truck races in seven starts at Charlotte. “It’s weird how things work out.”  MiamiHerald.com

“I’ve had races stolen like that when I was leading most laps, so I know what he’s feeling,” said Busch.

Rookie Cole Whitt finished third and took over the points lead in the process. Whitt, who is from Alpine, Calif., and won’t be 20 until June 22, became the first rookie and youngest driver in series history to lead the standings. He’s up by one point on Johnny Sauter, who finished sixth.

Kimi Raikkonen, a Formula One driver making his first NASCAR start, finished 15th after starting 31st. Raikkonen said he hopes to also drive in next week’s Nationwide race at CMS.  Charlotte Observer

Raikkonnen was about to make a green-flag stop on Lap 51, when Busch, his truck owner, spun off Turn 4 to cause the fourth caution and put Raikkonen back on pit sequence with the rest of the field.

Cole Whitt ran third and took over the series points lead. At 19, Whitt is the youngest driver ever to lead the series points and the first rookie.

James Buescher came home fourth, followed by Ron Hornaday Jr.

Jamie Dick’s brush with the outside wall caused the ninth caution of the race on Lap 96, with Bowyer in the lead. Bowyer kept his Chevrolet out front until David Starr’s Toyota smacked the wall to bring out the record-tying 10th and final caution of the race on Lap 106.

Bowyer led the field to the green flag for a restart on Lap 112 but surrendered the top spot 16 laps later. NASCAR.com
