Victory in Friday’s Lucas Oil 200 wasn’t the only thing Kyle Busch gained at Dover International Speedway.
He also gained a healthy dose of respect for Camping World Truck Series rookie and second-place finisher Cole Whitt.
Pulling away from Whitt’s No. 60 Red Bull Chevrolet after a restart on Lap 198 of 200, Busch won the race under caution when Nelson Piquet Jr. and Timothy Peters wrecked on the final lap.
Busch picked up his third Truck Series victory in five starts this season. Busch won for the second time at Dover—becoming the first repeat winner at the track—and for the 27th time in the series. NASCAR.com
“Cole Whitt did a really nice job,” Busch said. “This race was the first one that he really contended for that I’ve been in, and he did a great job. I snookered him on the second-to-last restart, and I got him a little bit there. On that last restart, he was right there with me.”
Whitt was very pleased with his runner-up finish.
“I’m just happy with my second-place run,” Whitt said. “Running second to Kyle was a good points day for us. It’s almost like winning the race.” MiamiHerald.com
Busch matched Mark Martin (FSY) with his 96 wins: 21 in Sprint Cup, 48 in the Nationwide Series, and 27 in Trucks. He can sweep the weekend and boost his total with wins Saturday in the Nationwide race or in Sunday’s Cup race.
Matt Crafton (FSY) was third, Austin Dillon (FSY) fourth and Harvick fifth. Harvick battled for the lead early but was dropped to the back of the field after a speeding penalty.
Busch won under caution and raced all 200 miles without incident against Harvick. The Sprint Cup regulars sparked a pit road dustup last week at Darlington Raceway and both were placed on probation.
The probation for all NASCAR-sanctioned events runs through June 15, a span that includes four Sprint Cup Series championship races and the non-points $1 million All-Star event.
“No issues there,” Busch said. “We had some close moments, but it was fine. All’s good as far as I know.” USA Today
