The Wausau native ended a five-year drought on the NASCAR Nationwide circuit with a win at Saturday’s Pepsi 300 at Nashville Superspeedway.

“It’s a good race track for me and a good one for Richard Childress Racing,” Wimmer said via phone hours after his win.

For now, he is happy to be in a place where he gets a top-notch car, rather than struggling the way some independant vehicles do on the NNS.

“We struggled in qualifying and practice, and the guys had to work real hard on the car all weekend long, and got it right and it was a good win for everyone,” Wimmer said.

“You try to do the best you can, but if you’re not racing each and every week, it’s hard to keep momentum up,” Wimmer said.

The 32-year-old Wisconsin racer shook off big-league heavyweights Clint Bowyer and Carl Edwards down the stretch to pull off an upset victory in the Pepsi 300.

“It’s very tough to win and have to step out,” said Wimmer. “When you step out of a car for a couple of weeks you lose a little bit.”

Wimmer: “I’m grateful for the opportunity I have, and I’ll try to make the most of it.”
