Carl Edwards back-flipped from his Ford Mustang, then, with checkered flag in hand, bolted into the grandstands to celebrate with enthusiastic fans at Michigan International Speedway.
Edwards high-fived his way through the crowd Saturday afternoon, after giving Livonia-based team owner Jack Roush another victory at his beloved track, winning the NASCAR Nationwide Series race before an estimated crowd of 38,000.
Nationwide points leader Ricky Stenhouse Jr. finished second, giving Roush Racing the one-two finish. Kyle Busch was third after a late-race battle with Paul Menard, the pole-sitter who finished fourth. The Detroit News
“I thought Ricky was setting sail, and I didn’t think I would catch him,” said Edwards, who led the most laps with 62. “He was doing such a great job. He is an unreal driver. I don’t think his car was balanced as well as mine, and somehow he was able to make it go that fast. He’s someone I’m a little nervous about in the future.”
Edwards claimed his fourth Nationwide win of the season and the 33rd of his career. He has also finished either first or second in the series’ last five races. MiamiHerald.com
“I guess that is a good thing for us for sure for the championship, but it doesn’t do anything for us not winning,” Stenhouse said. “We are right there where we need to be, we just have to cap it off. We have to get a little bit better. I think Carl is a little better at practice, getting his car where it needs to be.”
“We certainly won a lot of races in three years so maybe I shouldn’t be in this position so fast, but yet it is a little frustrating that we’re not able to get another win to tie and then another win to break,” Busch said. “We’ve been close — seems like every week we’re a solid third, fourth, fifth-place car.” The Associated Press
