Brendan Gaughan, a 33-year old rookie, overtook Carl Edwards to finish first in Nationwide Series qualifying Saturday morning at Bristol Motor Speedway.
Gaughan turned the half-mile lap in 15.209 seconds, reaching a speed of 126.162 mph.
Gaughan picked up his first pole in any NASCAR series since 2003, when he earned three in the truck series.
“It’s been a long time since I had a pole,” said Gaughan, who will make his first Nationwide start in the top 10 thus far this season. “I’m really excited.
“We never even tried to win poles in the trucks and we had three in a row. It was one of those things where we just put an emphasis on a solid starting position. I figured a top 12, but whatever the boys did to it made it a great race car.”
