In his first 16 starts at Daytona International Speedway, Joey Logano finished second twice.
Thanks to a last-lap push by Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Kyle Busch, Logano broke through in his 17th try to win Friday night’s Subway Jalapeno 250 Powered by Coca-Cola NASCAR Nationwide Series race before an estimated crowd of 65,000.
“This is Daytona. I’m pumped up. It’s so cool,” Logano said. “I’ve got to thank Kyle for pushing me up there.”
Logano, wheeling the No. 20 Toyota, hadn’t led all night and took the white flag in sixth before Busch helped him bulldoze to the front.
After a multiple-car melee broke loose at the finish, Logano survived the carnage and ended up in Victory Lane. Daytona Beach News-Journal
Reed Sorenson, last weekend’s race winner at Road America, finished third and collected a $100,000 bonus from series title sponsor Nationwide Insurance. Sorenson was the highest finisher among those eligible for the Nationwide “Dash 4 Cash” award.
“At the end, I didn’t know where I was going, but I trusted Jason [Leffler], and I owe everything to him,” Sorenson said. “He came back and got me when I was stuck all by myself for 20 or 30 laps.”
Busch ended up finishing fourth, while Justin Allgaier took the fifth spot. MiamiHerald.com
