Drag Racing: Bishop A Big Show At Home Event Angus MacMaster

The World’s fastest jeweller Stuart Bishop has the confidence and the mechanical arsenal to make a good go of securing a maiden Group One Top Doorslammer title during this weekend’s 42nd Australian Nationals at Queensland’s Willowbank Raceway.

Coming off a spectacular semi-final effort and the securing of the fastest bonus points from the season opening Sydney round a fortnight ago, Bishop finds himself in third position overall in the Championship.

The two drivers ahead of him are the vastly experienced World record-breaking John Zappia of Western Australia and fellow Brisbane campaigner, six-time Australian champion Victor Bray.

The Wallace Bishop Jewellers CEO may only be competing in his second year of top level drag racing but already some of his International class opponents are standing up to take notice.

“The SBR crew has really got the ’67 Camaro Diamond Doorslammer on song and everyone is excited about our start to the new season, ” said Bishop.

“It’s all been a work-in-progress getting the car sorted and also ensuring the time I get to spend at the track is always quality time.

“After three 1st round finals efforts to finish last season, we broke through for our first semi-final and now it’s about going that next step and progressing to the main show.

“There’d be no better place to do that than at our home strip at Willowbank in front of family and friends.

“We’ve also got young Cody Grohn suiting up in the ‘Junior Gem’ Junior Dragster with support from Wallace Bishop Jewellers so all in all it’s shaping as a huge weekend for SBR. ”

Adding to the spectacle of another home-track assault will be Saturday’s attendance of avid Stuart Bishop Racing supporters, Luke Power and Jonathan Brown of the Brisbane Lions.

Both AFL players have been following Bishop’s progress in Top Doorslammer with added interest and have made the Australian Nationals a must on their off-season social itinerary.

Major involvement of drag racing fans is encouraged this weekend at Willowbank as the second instalment of the Wallace Bishop Jewellers photographic competition gives individuals an opportunity to share in more than $20 000 worth of cash and prizes.

Open to professional and amateur photographers, the object of the competition is to shoot images of the immaculately presented ’67 Camaro Diamond Doorslammer or any one of the other great drag racing vehicles on show every weekend throughout Australia.

Drag racing fans young and old are encouraged to participate in this unique incentive.

Simply by taking photos of all the drag racing action on and off the track, then submitting images into the competition, individuals will go in the running to win cash and prizes worth more than $20 000, courtesy of Wallace Bishop Jewellers.

The length and breadth of the country will play host to a vast array of quarter mile drag racing action, coordinated at the three major venues in Ipswich, Sydney and Perth, plus plenty of smaller hotspots in between.
