TELL US ABOUT YOUR LAP:
“It was pretty cool. You always worry about conditions here it seems like. The track cools down a lot during the session and everybody worries about where you draw for your run. We picked up time from practice which was good. It didn’t seem like the conditions changed a lot today which was unusual which definitely worked in our favor. I’m surprised. I am not much of qualifier. It shows Darian Grubb (crew chief) and all the guys at Stewart-Haas how hard of work they have been doing and today is a result of that.”
HOW EXCITED ARE YOU ABOUT HAVING PIT BOX ONE?
“I will probably miss it because I won’t remember where pit box one is. We got it last year because we got some rain a couple of times and we got the first box. It is no different this week than it is every week. If you are the guy that gets that first pit box you don’t have to get very far to get to where the timing line is and the order you come out of the pits. That is always a little bit of an advantage to be the guy that gets that first box.”
DOES DARIAN USUALLY MAKE THE DECISION ABOUT WHICH PIT BOX YOU TAKE? DO YOU HAVE ANY INPUT IN TO IT?
“He picks it off of where he wants to sit and watch the race usually. He would pick on the backstretch if he could at a lot of places. Normally I don’t give him much of a choice by the time he gets to pick pits about two-thirds of them have already been picked so he gets to pick from what is left. Darian always makes that decision and he has enough savvy he knows what to pick and why to pick there. There is a lot of thought that goes in to where you are at.”
ARE YOU JUST AS EXCITED ABOUT HOW THE CAR FEELS FOR THE RACE AS YOU WERE FOR QUALIFYING?
“We fought a little bit too tight in practice and we didn’t quite get it all before we switched over to qualifying trim. I think we learned a lot today in the little bit of time we had before we had to do that switch over. I am confident. It seems like if you can get it figured for qualifying there is something we can take out of this today that will help us toward tomorrow. Even if the weather gets bad, I feel like we can do some things to where we need to be.”
