When a sudden rain shower interrupted and then washed out Sprint Cup qualifying Friday at Kentucky Speedway, Kyle Busch inherited the pole position for Saturday night’s Quaker State 400 as the fastest driver in Friday’s practice.
The field for the inaugural Cup race at the 1.5-mile track was set according to NASCAR’s rainout rules, with the starting order established by speeds in final practice. Under that format, Juan Montoya will take the green flag next to Busch, on the outside of the front row.
Kurt Busch, Kyle’s brother, will start third in his No. 22 Penske Dodge. NASCAR.com
“We’ve had a really good car and unloaded well,” Busch said. “I wish we could have run the lap and put it on the pole for sure. With the way the weather worked out, we took [the pole] based off the practice speeds that we had earlier today.”
Kasey Kahne will start fourth followed by Jimmie Johnson.
Brad Keselowski, Carl Edwards, David Ragan, who won his first Sprint Cup race last Saturday at Daytona, Tony Stewart and Paul Menard will roll off sixth through 10th, respectively.
Kevin Harvick, the current points leader, will roll off in 19th. Harvick holds a five-point advantage over Edwards. MiamiHerald.com
Fortune wasn’t as kind Friday to Waltrip, who was trying to make his third Cup start of the season. The two-time Daytona 500 champion turned the fastest lap of the non-top 35 cars but didn’t have enough points or attempts to earn a spot in the field after the rainout.
Waltrip was running a car that was a tribute to the recent Hall of Fame election of his older brother, Darrell. Both were raised in Owensboro, Ky., making the weekend a family homecoming.
At a news conference earlier Friday, Michael Waltrip said his No. 15 Toyota was the most popular in the garage because it had a photo on it of Darrell Waltrip celebrating in victory lane after his first Cup win in 1975 at Nashville. USA Today
