Dale Earnhardt Inc. driver Martin Truex heads to Sunday’s LifeLock 400 hoping to regain some of the momentum that his team showed in making the 2007 NASCAR Sprint Cup Chase.
Truex moved from 16th to sixth in the point standings over a five-week period last year, beginning with the spring event in Dover through the first event at New Hampshire International Speedway. In the middle of that run was a second-place finish at Michigan International Speedway, site of this weekend’s race.
“We really started to click as a team at this point last year,” Truex said. “This year is shaping up like 2007. We’ve been bringing good cars to the track, but we’ve had some bad luck. Our team knows that we need to be consistently fast if we’re going to make the Chase.”
Truex considers Michigan International Speedway one of his favorite tracks and his stats at the 2-mile oval back up his confidence. The Mayetta, N.J. native has two top-five finishes in his four starts at the facility.
“Michigan’s a great track because it’s fast and wide,” explained Truex. “You can run a bunch of different lines and still be competitive. There’s plenty of room to pass and the surface is smooth. We’ve pretty much always been strong there and hopefully that will continue this weekend.”
