Trevor Bayne finally made a mistake. Fortunately for him, it didn’t happen until he missed the turn pulling into Victory Lane at the Daytona 500.
The youngest driver to win the Great American Race gave the historic Wood Brothers team its fifth Daytona 500 victory — its first since 1976 with David Pearson — and Bayne did it in a No. 21 Ford that was retrofitted to resemble Pearson’s famed ride.
In just his second Sprint Cup start, the 20-year-old Bayne stunned NASCAR’s biggest names with a thrilling overtime win Sunday at Daytona International Speedway, holding off Carl Edwards after fan favorite Dale Earnhardt Jr. crashed in NASCAR’s first attempt at a green-white-checkered flag finish. “You did it, man,” crew chief Donnie Wingo shouted over the radio as Bayne, who turned 20 on Saturday, became the race’s youngest winner in just his second career Cup start. Carl Edwards was second and David Gilliland third as Ford swept the top three spots, with Labonte (Toyota) fourth and Kurt Busch fifth. USA Today
“I keep thinking I’m dreaming,” Bayne said in a television interview. “This is just incredible.”
As the field came down the back straightaway on the first overtime, former Daytona 500 winner Ryan Newman spun and collected Martin Truex and Dale Earnhardt Jr., among others.
Bayne drives for the Wood Brothers racing team, a dominant NASCAR team in the 1960s and ‘70s but one that hadn’t won a Cup race since 2001.
The newly repaved Daytona International Speedway spawned a constant shuffling of the leaders while they raced in two-car pairs around the 2.5-mile, high-banked track. Los Angeles Times
