Carl Edwards led the most laps and won Sunday’s Ford 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway to score his series-best ninth victory of the season, but Johnson claimed the big prize—his record-tying third consecutive Cup Series title—with a 15th-place finish that gave him a 69-point advantage over Edwards in the final standings.

Johnson became the second to win three consecutive Sprint Cup championships, wrapping up the first three-peat since Cale Yarborough’s (1976-78) with a 15th-place finish in Sunday’s Ford 400 season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

The Hendrick Motorsports driver pitted while running fifth with 15 laps remaining rather than risk running out of gas. He finished 69 points ahead of Carl Edwards, whose No. 99 Ford ran dry on fuel shortly after taking its series-high ninth victory this season.

“We lost the war but we won this battle,” Edwards told his crew. “Second place in the championship isn’t what we came here for. But Jimmie is a great guy and he deserved to win.”
