Team Chevy drivers showed they will be a force to be reckoned with in Sunday’s 52nd Annual Daytona 500 with outstanding runs in the Gatorade Duel at Daytona qualifying races.
Jimmie Johnson, No. 48 Lowe’s Impala, beat fellow Chevrolet driver Kevin Harvick, No. 29 Shell-Pennzoil Impala, by a mere five one-thousandths of a second to win Duel No. 1. Johnson was in his backup car after being involved in a multi-car accident yesterday during practice.
Tony Stewart, No. 14 Office Depot/Old Spice Impala, finished second in Duel No. 2 by just 14 one-thousandths of a second.
Clint Bowyer, No. 33 Cheerios/Hamburger Helper Impala, also a backup car, finished fourth and Regan Smith, No. 78 Furniture Row Impala, finished fifth to give Team Chevy four of the top-five finishers in Duel No. 1.
In Duel No. 2, Juan Pablo Montoya, No. 42 Target Impala, was third behind Stewart.
Pole sitter Mark Martin, No. 5 GoDaddy.com Impala, and outside front row starter Dale Earnhardt, Jr., No. 88 AMP Energy/National Guard Impala, both finished 21st in their respective Duel race. With their starting positions secure for Sunday’s Great American Race, both drivers chose to keep their Impala race cars out of harm’s way.
Mike Bliss, No. 36 Wave Energy Impala, raced his way into the Daytona 500 with a 13th place finish in Duel No. 1.
