Tony Stewart put the No. 14 Office Depot/Old Spice Chevrolet on the pole for Samsung Mobile 500 at Texas Motor Speedway. Sunday’s race will be the two-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) champion’s 400th career start.
This is Stewart’s 11th pole in NSCS competition and his first since Martinsville Speedway, October 2005.
Team Chevy drivers captured six of the top-10 starting positions for the 334-lap, 501-mile race.
Four-time defending champion Jimmie Johnson, No. 48 Lowe’s Chevrolet, will roll off fourth.
Jeff Burton, No. 31 Caterpillar Chevrolet, qualified in the sixth position. Clint Bowyer, No. 33 Cheerios/Hamburger Helper Chevrolet, posted the eighth fastest qualifying time.
Dale Earnhardt, Jr., No. 88 AMP Energy/National Guard Chevrolet, will start ninth in the eighth race of the season.
Ryan Newman, No. 39 US Army ROTC Chevrolet, last week’s winner at Phoenix International Raceway, will roll off in the 10th starting spot.
Sam Hornish, Jr. (Dodge), Greg Biffle (Ford) and Kasey Kahne (Ford) complete the top-five starters.
TONY STEWART, NO. 14 OFFICE DEPOT/OLD SPICE CHEVROLET, POLE SITTER: “I am real happy with our lap. I’m not normally a very good qualifying so that is a great great run for our Office Depot/Old Spice Chevy. I want to thank Hendrick chassis and engines. This one is for everybody at Stewart-Haas Racing. They have really been working hard. Last weekend was a good weekend for us as an organization. I am really proud of what they are doing, so thank you guys!
