Carl Edwards is the new Sprint Cup Series points leader following the NASCAR race at Fontana, a result of his sixth-place finish and former points leader Kurt Busch’s off-day.

Kurt Busch, who was leading the way, fell to third behind Ryan Newman. Kyle Busch, who dominated Sunday’s 400-mile race, is fourth.

“What an exciting race,” Edwards said. “For our team to come out of here leading the points is big considering how we ran all day. We really weren’t that good.”

Kurt Busch finished 17th after fighting an ill-handling car all afternoon.

“It’s disappointing because we wanted to come here and extend our point lead and gain some momentum heading into Martinsville next weekend,” he said.

“We went in the wrong direction. It’s a long season—a marathon, not a sprint. We’ll put this behind us and head short-track racing next week.”  Daytona Beach News-Journal
