Matt Kenseth cruised to victory in the Bank of America 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, where Jimmie Johnson’s hopes for a sixth consecutive title took a violent hit figuratively and literally.

Kenseth passed Kyle Busch with 25 laps remaining and held on for his third Sprint Cup victory of the season.

Johnson finished 34th after sustaining a heavy impact with the SAFER barrier in Turn 2. His No. 48 Chevrolet hit at virtually full speed after Johnson lost control trying to pass Newman on the inside.

At the midpoint of the Chase for the Sprint Cup, he fell five spots to eighth in the standings and trails Edwards by 35 points with five races left in the 10-race title run. USA Today

Following the Bank of America 500, Edwards holds the Chase points lead by five points over Kevin Harvick and Kenseth is seven points behind Edwards.

Rounding out the top 10 were Harvick in sixth, followed by A.J. Allmendinger, Tony Stewart, Denny Hamlin and Ryan Newman.
