Kevin Harvick had a happy ending in NASCAR’s longest race of the season at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Dale Earnhardt Jr. didn’t.

In a wild finish that kept the tone of the day’s premier races, Harvick steered through the carnage and conserved enough of his fuel to make it to the checkered flag in Sunday night’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Harvick certainly had not been a contender for much of the race. He started 28th, and then ran outside of the top 10 for most of the night.

Harvick led only two laps in the 402-lap affair. It was his first win a Sprint Cup points-paying race at Charlotte, a track he considers as one of his least favorites

Harvick also moved up three spots to second in the standings. And that may be the biggest gain of all.

Carl Edwards retained the top spot with his 16th-place finish and has 445 points, 36 more than Harvick.

Johnson, the five-time defending series champion, dropped one spot to third, one point behind Harvick.

Earnhardt remained fourth with 402 points. He has gone 105 races without a win following his seventh-place finish.

Busch dropped two spots to fifth after placing 32nd Sunday.
