Carl Edwards narrowly missed out on winning NASCAR’s season-opening Daytona 500 on Sunday but looks like a man who could dethrone five-time defending Sprint Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson.

Edwards, who won the final two races of 2010, placed second to rookie Trevor Bayne in the Daytona 500 but still leads the NASCAR Sprint Cup standings since Bayne has not declared to run for Sprint Cup points.

“I think we have got a lot of positive things going on, a lot of them. Our performances have been good, we got a win, a win and a second, that’s a pretty good streak to be on,” Edwards told reporters.

“You never know what’s going to happen. But a couple of the tracks that are coming up are really good for us. I feel really good about it ... this season picked up right now where we left off and I’m having fun.” Yahoo! Eurosport UK

Bayne, who became the race’s youngest winner, wasn’t even sure where to find Victory Lane as he steered his No. 21 Ford to meet his thrilled teammates.

“I keep thinking I’m dreaming,” Bayne said in a television interview. “This is just incredible.”

With the win Bayne breaks Gordon’s mark as the youngest winner in Daytona 500 history. Gordon was 25 when he won the 500 in 1997.
