TEAM CHEVY AT RICHMOND INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY – ALBA COLON, GM RACING PROGRAM GROUP MANAGER NASCAR SPRINT CUP SERIES:
“What a race at Talladega! You never know how things are going to work out. It was great to see Kevin Harvick and the No. 29 Shell-Pennzoil RCR Chevy team get the win; and to see the EGR teams have top finishes. It was exciting to watch so many Chevy drivers battling for the win.
“It’s a new weekend, a new game, and another opportunity for our Chevrolet teams to position themselves for a win at Richmond. There’s nothing like short track racing under the lights, and Richmond is a fun track with multiple racing lines that drivers, teams, and race fans really enjoy.
“The shorter two-day schedule with no practice session following qualifying makes for some interesting strategies. There is a fine line of how much time to commit to qualifying set-ups, but most of the teams will be utilizing the practice times to work on their racing set-ups. There’s extra incentive in qualifying well even for teams guaranteed a starting spot since it is rare that a Cup race is won from outside the top 10 starting spots.
“Setup is at a premium in getting the cars to turn well through the corners and carry good speed off turns two and four. Our GM Racing engineers work closely with our Chevy teams in areas that can impact their performance. From shock and 7-post testing, to wind tunnel and chassis simulation programs, we work hard to provide the necessary tools for them to be able to win races. The teams will also be taking a lot of notes this weekend to use when we return to Richmond in the fall since it will be the last race before the Chase for the Sprint Cup begins.
“Chevrolet hasn’t won a Cup race at Richmond since September, 2008, so we are looking forward to being back in the winner’s circle again Saturday night.”
