Jamie McMurray proposed to longtime girlfriend Christy Futrell on Monday at the Phoenician Resort in Scottsdale, Ariz., and Roush Fenway teammate Carl Edwards got engaged last month to girlfriend Kate Downey.
But McMurray admitted that he felt nervous proposing.
Futrell’s reaction? McMurray said she asked, ‘‘Are you kidding? Are you serious?’’ McMurray said he responded, ‘‘Yeah, I’m serious.’‘
Edwards, 29, has been more guarded about his engagement to Downey, a hometown friend from Columbia, Mo., but opened up about her recently.
‘‘She’s a wonderful, wonderful woman,’’ Edwards said. ‘‘I can’t believe I’m getting married. If you asked me four years ago if I’d be proposing to someone I would have said no way, but she just got me.

‘‘I know her family, and it just kind of all fell into place so that I’m certain that we really care about each other for the right reasons. That’s a gift.’’
