NASCAR red-flagged the Centurion Boats at The Glen with eight laps to go as wreckers cleaned up the carnage from the cars of Gilliland, Bobby Labonte, Max Papis, Reed Sorenson, Dave Blaney, Joe Nemechek, Michael Waltrip and Sam Hornish Jr.
Labonte gingerly climbed from the No. 43 Dodge and was transported to a local hospital for further evaluation and then released Sunday evening. All other drivers either continued in the race or were checked out and released from the infield care center.
“I’m OK, but I have a broken heart,” Papis said. “That was crazy. There as no place to go. Everybody kept pushing and shoving out there before that happened. It is what it is, but it was definitely bad.”
Labonte was taken by ground to a hospital in Elmira, N.Y., according to members of his Petty Enterprises organization. Team vice president Robbie Loomis said the driver was complaining of discomfort in his rib and abdominal area, but did not believe he was seriously hurt.
“They think he’s OK,” Loomis said after the Centurion Boats at The Glen. “He’s a little sore. That was a heck of a wreck.”
“I’m a little sore everywhere, I think,” Gilliland said. “But I’ll be OK, I think.”
