The old fogeys were out in force Sunday, with Old Timers’ Day at Yankee Stadium, Tom Watson coming oh-so-close at the British Open and Lance Armstrong moving into second place at the Tour de France.
Add one more ageless wonder to the list.
Hershel McGriff, 81, became NASCAR’s oldest driver when he placed 13th on the road course at Portland International Raceway Sunday. In returning to the course at such a ripe old age, McGriff, a member of the Motorsports Hall of Fame, broke his own record - set when he last raced back in 2002. New York Daily News
McGriff took part in Sunday’s pre-race qualifying but made the race as one of 26 drivers competing for 28 spots in the field.
In a career that has spanned six decades, he won four NASCAR Cup races, and 37 races on the West series. He is a member of the Motorsports Hall of Fame. The Associated Press
Asked after the race how he felt, McGriff probably said, “Great! I’m glad I didn’t finish 13th.” San Francisco Chronicle
