Gear Problems Put Smith In Eleventh Position In NASCAR Camping World Series

Moses Smith, driver of the No. 16 Hasa Pool Products/White Flyer Toyota Camry finished just outside the top-ten in eleventh place at Altamont Raceway. The NASCAR Camping World Series West driver from Bill McAnally Racing is seventh in the chase for the series championship and only 12 points out of sixth as he heads to the final race of the season. He is only 48 points out of the top-five.

The No. 16 Hasa team lead by interim crew chief, Craig Raudman put the Hasa Toyota in the top ten in the only practice of the weekend. Less than a tenth of a second faster would have put the No. 16 on the board in fourth of the 33 competitors.

Smith improved his time when it came to qualifying; putting the Hasa Toyota Camry on the inside of row four.

Smith gained a position by the half-way break. The team made only minor adjustments to the No. 16 Hasa Pool Products Toyota Camry. At lap 135, Smith began to have a problem shifting the No. 16. Smith would have to drive the remaining 45 laps with one hand on the steering wheel and one hand on the shifter. At lap 160, the No. 16 Hasa Toyota had moved into eighth. During the final laps, Smith would lose a few of positions and finish in eleventh.

“The car was good in the first half of the race, but it was really good in the second half,” said Smith “We were moving up, when during one of the restarts, we lost fourth gear. It just kept ‘popping’ out of gear. I didn’t want to pit so I decided to just hold it in gear with one hand and drive with the other. I was able to maintain position, but it was very difficult to get a pass made. I am glad that we salvaged 11th . .. almost a top ten.”
