Who’s atop the Top Fuel dragster ladder two races into the NHRA Full Throttle Series season? Six-time champion Tony Schumacher? Larry Dixon?
Nah. Try Antron Brown, a second-year Top Fuel newcomer who quickly is showing he’s as fast on four wheels as he was on two wheels and two feet.
Brown, a former college track star and 16-time winner in Pro Stock Motorcycle before moving into Top Fuel last season, beat Brandon Bernstein in the Lucas Oil Slick Mist Nationals on Sunday at Firebird International Raceway, a win that pushed him into the series lead after finishing second two weeks ago in the circuit’s season opener.
“We were bummed at Pomona (Calif.), because we thought we had the car to beat,” Brown said. “But I think we’re only going to get stronger as the season goes along.”
Ron Capps raced to his second consecutive Funny Car victory of the season Sunday at the Lucas Oil Slick Mist NHRA Nationals at Firebird International Raceway.
Capps took a single pass to claim his 27th career victory after final round opponent Mike Neff’s Ford Mustang broke on the burnout. Capps powered his Dodge Charger to 4.048 seconds at 306.81 miles per hour to win for the second time at the Phoenix track.
“Neff was having one of those weekends going where they looked like they couldn’t be beat,” Capps said. “They had [crew chief] John Medlen in the hospital, and we’re all glad to hear that he’s OK. It was one of those stories that you almost hate to upset.”
