With back-to-back wins to open the NHRA season, the disappointment of 2008 is rapidly becoming a distant memory for Funny Car veteran Ron Capps.
But Capps, 43, a three-time championship runner-up, knows better than to get too excited too soon. He saw a 154-point lead after 14 races evaporate into a fourth-place finish two years ago, so despite a 97-point edge heading into this weekend’s ACDelco Gatornationals at Gainesville, Fla., he refuses to look too far ahead.
“We’re approaching every run literally like it’s the last we’re going to make,” said Capps, who won the Gatornationals in 2006 and ‘07. “That, so far, has really paid off.”
Capps has 27 career wins and his crew chief, drag racing legend Ed “Ace” McCulloch, had 22 before retiring as a driver in 1995. But neither has won a championship, and that’s what drives their partnership, especially after they were shut out of victory lane a year ago.
