Rod Fuller drove his David Powers-owned Caterpillar dragster to the provisional No. 8 qualifying position Friday evening at Brainerd International Raceway with a pass of 3.933-seconds.
Entering the 16th race on the 2008 NHRA schedule ranked fourth in the POWERade Top Fuel standings, the seven-time Top Fuel winner raced his Caterpillar dragster to a run of 4.490 seconds at 178.50 mph to open qualifying on Friday afternoon at the Brainerd NHRA race. It was the ninth quickest pass of the session. Fuller then used a tune-up from crew chief Rob Flynn to power the Caterpillar-backed rail to the eighth quickest pass of the day, clocking a lap of 3.933 at 308.71. Fuller will secure a position in the Countdown to the Championship after qualifying this weekend at B.I.R.
“It was a good day,” Fuller said. “We had fun playing softball in the morning and came back with a good run on Friday night. Our first pass was too aggressive with the sun on the track and we ran early in the order, so we really couldn’t stand on it for the night run. We’ll get after it on Saturday and gear up for race day.”
Professional nitro qualifying resumes Saturday afternoon at the Brainerd track with sessions scheduled for Noon and 3 p.m. (CT). Fuller qualified seventh last August at Brainerd. His teammate, Antron Brown, raced to the No. 7 spot Friday at the Brainerd race.
