Justin Humphreys was happy to see the 6.738-second elapsed time on his second qualifying run Friday as the Lucas Oil Nationals got underway at Brainerd International Raceway. But he knows he’ll need to pick up the pace in Saturday’s two sessions.
After opening with a 6.761-second time, he came back in the RaceRedi Dodge with his best of 6.738 at 204.76 mph.
“We did improve,” he said, “but the car still doesn’t want to move quicker in first and second gear and that’s killing our elapsed times. We should have a good qualifying session in the morning. The conditions will be the best of qualifying. We’re working to figure things out. We want to get into Sunday’s show.”
