Over the last three weeks, sixteen year old Mike Vincec has logged countless laps in competition as the Cameron Motorsports driver took 4 wins in the Sunoco Ron Fellows Karting Championship (SRFKC) and two top-5’s in the Snap On Stars Of Karting Series (Stars). But this coming weekend, June 8-10, Mike puts it all out there as he debuts in the Formula BMW USA series against a field of international drivers. To top it off, this round is part of the undercard during the Formula 1 race at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal.
“It has to be every racer’s dream” exclaimed Mike during a recent interview. “To race on an international circuit is incredible enough, but to do it during a Formula 1 weekend is just fantastic. ” Currently the championship leader in two classes (SRFKC) and third overall in the Stars standings for ICC, Mike took the Formula BMW licensing course last year in Valencia, Spain and attracted the attention of various teams competing in the series. After testing with a few teams, Mike entered into a development deal with Canadian-based Jensen Motorsport. “We were pleasantly surprised with Mike’s maturity behind the wheel of the FB02” stated team principal Eric Jensen. “After some extensive tests over the winter, it was decided that we should get Mike on track for select events in the 2007 schedule. The Montreal race is ideal on two fronts in that it is effectively a home race for Mike, but most importantly because of the ability to showcase his talent in front of a very important audience. “
Mike is now in his second year of senior competition in karting and had a terrific freshman campaign. The reigning Formula Sr. (ICC) Canadian National Champion has started 2007 off right with multiple poles and wins in ICC and the new Rotax DD2 class over two events in the Sunoco Ron Fellows Karting Championship. “It was decided that we would ease into formula cars” stated Mike. “We are having terrific success in karts for only our second year and there is some unfinished business to take care of. ” Despite two top-5 finishes at the recent Stars event in New Castle, IN, Mike is looking to put his Cameron Motorsports CRG/SwedeTech on the front row and pick up a podium.
Mike and the Jensen Motorsport crew will be on track Friday, June 8 for practice and qualifying for two races this weekend. Formula BMW USA races take place at 4:00 p. m. Saturday and 10:45 a. m. on Sunday (all times E. D.T. ). A single qualifying session will set starting positions for both races.
Mike would like to thank Jensen Motorsport, The Decal Zone, Level Ten Communications and BIG Racing for their support in running this event the Formula BMW USA series.
