Throughout the course of the 2008 POWERade Drag Racing season, Kurt Johnson and the ACDelco Cobalt Racing team have been among the very best in qualifying, netting 14 Top Five starts in the first 17 races. Despite having to overcome an electrical malfunction on Saturday, the blue crew was able to continue this trend on Sunday at the Mac Tools U. S. Nationals.
Taking advantage of the improved conditions in the morning session at O’Reilly Raceway Park, KJ posted the quickest time in the less-preferred right hand lane at 6.666-seconds with a top speed of 207.72 mph to earn the fifth starting position for Monday’s final eliminations.
“Considering the electrical nightmare we had to deal with on Saturday, we’re pretty pleased to come back and qualify fifth with our ACDelco Cobalt. Being 19th, as we were after the morning session yesterday, and again this morning when we pulled into the water, certainly raises your blood pressure a bit, but it also makes you pay attention to what you are doing, making sure you do your job.”
“We’re happy to run that ‘. 66 when we did. To even have a shot at the trophy, you have to make that perfect run when it counts, and we were able to do that this morning. It was a good performance by the entire team, and I believe we have a car capable of winning. It’s our sport’s biggest race, and we are going to make sure we are on top of our game.”
