Kurt Johnson completed a solid qualifying effort on Saturday at the O’Reilly Fall Nationals in Dallas, TX, with his 6.646-second best earning the second-generation racer the seventh starting position for Sunday’s final eliminations at the Texas Motorplex. In each of his four attempts, Johnson was among the best of the 20 Pro Stock cars attempting to qualify, as he earned his 15th Top Half starting berth in 20 starts at the Lone Star State quarter-mile.
Although pleased with his team’s workmanlike performance, Johnson knows improvement will be necessary in order to protect their position atop the Pro Stock standings. Therefore, he immediately turned his attention towards analyzing the data from their runs to determine their approach for race day.
“We may not be the fastest car out here, but I believe we have a car that we can win with. Our ACDelco Cobalt has been consistent all weekend, and I believe we’ve picked up from where we started, but we’re still off a little from where we want to be in the last part of the race course. Fortunately, I have some ideas on what we can do to fix it.
“Ironically enough, I think we actually slowed it down in the back today, but we picked it up so significantly in the early part of the run that we ran better. Besides, I think I can go back and pick up our performance in the back half for tomorrow, so we should be able to step right up to the front. Still, it will be a matter of letting the clutch out first, so tomorrow I’ll be driving to win.”
