One of the hallmarks of Kurt Johnson and the ACDelco Cobalt Racing team’s championship-contending season has been their consistent performance in qualifying with 18 Top Five starts in the first 22 races. They continued this trend during the first day of the ACDelco Las Vegas Nationals in Las Vegas, NV recording one of the top elapsed times in each of the two sessions.
After opening with a solid 6.739-second pass in the afternoon at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Johnson stepped up to 6.719-second, 204.66 mph run in the evening session, earning him the provisional fifth starting position. However, with two attempts remaining on Saturday before the sixteen-car field is established, KJ set his sights on moving up.
“Our second run was a lot better than the first. We had some electrical issues in the afternoon with an rpm-sensitive switch that kept the shift light from turning on, so we fixed that problem and our ACDelco Cobalt went nice and straight in the evening session. We ran a 6.71, but still feel we are off a little bit, so we’re going to look over the data to find out why.
“We have the left lane in the morning session, which seems a little better than the right, so we’re going to try and improve even further. Jeg (Coughlin) and Greg (Anderson) are making good runs, but we feel we can pick up just as we did tonight and be right there with them.”
