Morgan Lucas driving his Lucas Oil Stabilizer Top Fuel dragster will start the 44th annual Auto Club NHRA Finals from the No. 7 starting position relying on his best time from Thursday’s qualifying of 3.855 seconds, 306.46 mph to enter the race. He will race Doug Herbert in the opening round of Sunday’s competition.
This will be their 16th match up with Herbert holding the slight edge in head-to-head pairings with Lucas having seven round wins to Herbert’s eight. The last time the pair met was in the first round of the inaugural Carolina Nationals in Charlotte.
“We didn’t run as quick as we did last Thursday on that last run, but it went better than our first run today and yesterday when it broke the throttle cable,” said Lucas “J.R.’s (teammate, Todd) car ran a little bit better which is good. We went down the track twice today and ran very well both times. My reaction times are coming around; the team is working so well together. If we can keep our luck together and go down the track four times tomorrow and pull one out when we need to when it will cool tomorrow night, we should be just fine.”
