Kenny Bernstein, a seven-time world champion, tore up quarter-mile strips across the United States for 24 years. He won six NHRA titles — two in Top Fuel (1996, 2001) and four in Funny Car (1985-88) — and one IHRA title (1979) in Funny Car while piling up 88 event victories.
But Bernstein no longer climbs into the cockpit of a dragster. He leaves that to his son Brandon.
In his fifth season behind the wheel of the Budweiser/Lucas Oil dragster, Brandon, 35, already has a solid résumé with 17 event victories in 102 races.
“Our expectations are to win the race this weekend,” said Kenny Bernstein, who won at HRP in 1991, 1996 and 2002. “The team’s performance in Gainesville should carry over to this event. Brandon and I have five wins between us here, so we have had some success at this track. We are gonna try our best to win.”
His second-place finish in Florida pushed him to third in the point standings, 122 behind leader Schumacher, heading into the fourth event on the 24-race schedule.
There are so many good cars,” Brandon said. “Four or five years ago, it was two or three cars that were always running good and winning races. Now, there are 10 to 12 cars. There are a lot of really good teams that are competitive now.”
