Morgan Lucas scored his first career Top Fuel victory during the rain-drenched Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway.
Lucas posted an on-and-off the throttle 5.231 elapsed time at only 162.86 miles per hour to defeat No. 1 qualified Spencer Massey in a traction-challenged match under the lights. Massey lifted early and coasted to a 5.418.
“I probably imagined something a lot prettier than that but we got it done and it’s time for this crew to enjoy something they’ve worked at for a very long time. I hope this is just the first of many we can celebrate together,” Lucas said. Spartanburg Herald Journal
Jack Beckman (Funny Car) and Eddie Krawiec (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also won their divisions in the NHRA Full Throttle Series event. The Pro Stock final was postponed because of rain, with Jeg Coughlin and Jason Line scheduled race Monday morning. The Associated Press
“I have had problems with my eyes, so I got glasses with the coating and they fogged up,” Beckman said. “I kept the glasses off until I got ready to run and they fogged up again. I did the burnout and backed up, lit the pre-stage light, pulled down my visor and it fogged up too. I held my breath and it cleared up about half-track.” Spartanburg Herald Journal
In Pro Stock Motorcycle, Eddie Krawiec earned his first career win with a 6.902 at 192.91 against rookie Douglas Horne (6.949, 191.13). The Associated Press
