Lucas Oil Stabilizer Top Fuel driver, Morgan Lucas lost a very close first round race against former champion, Larry Dixon. The 24-year old Lucas made Dixon, the No. 1 qualifier, earn every bit of the win at the O’Reilly Super Start Batteries Nationals by leaving the starting line first (.063 – 077) and held him at bay up until the very end of the dragstrip. It was at that point Dixon was able to get past Morgan after the pair ran similar elapsed times of 3.908 seconds, 303.78 mph to Dixon’s ET of 3.871 seconds, 309.63 mph. The margin of victory was. 023-thousandths of a second.
Lucas was the No. 16 qualifier at the Texas Motorplex entering the race after running a time of 3.967 seconds in the quickest 1,000 feet Top Fuel field since NHRA instituted the newer distance in July.
In the Top Fuel NHRA POWERade points standings, Lucas moves back one position to the No. 12 position and has accumulated a total sum of 799 points after the completion of 20 of 24 events.
The next NHRA National event is the 21st annual O’Reilly Mid-South Nationals at the Memphis Motorsports Park in nearby Millington, Tenn., slated to run on Sept. 26 – 28.
