After enduring two days of constant rain which forced track officials to make alternate parking arrangements for the fans and campers, the skies over Heartland Park Topeka finally cleared on Friday, allowing qualifying for the O’Reilly Summer Nationals to run as scheduled. Summit Racing Pro Stock Pontiac racer Greg Anderson looked to take advantage of the opportunity and secure a good starting spot for race day.
However, after his opening two runs produced a best effort of 6.685 seconds, placing him tenth midway through qualifying, Anderson immediately began to dissect the data from both his and teammate Jason Line’s Summit Racing Pontiacs, searching for a way to improve their collective performance.
“That certainly wasn’t the way we wanted to start our weekend,” said Anderson. “After it bogged really badly on the first pass, we took a lot of clutch out of it for the evening session, but that made it even worse, shutting the motor right off. Fortunately, our time from the opening run was good enough to keep our Summit Racing Pontiac in the top twelve heading into tomorrow when it’s supposed to be significantly warmer.
“Although we naturally want to move up during our two attempts on Saturday, it’s even more important that we change positions, because as it stands right now we would have to run our teammate in the first round on Sunday. We’ll have to deal with a hot and greasy race track, but we simply have got to get a handle on this race car and move ourselves up the ladder. We have our work cut out for us, but I think we’re up to the challenge.”
