The first day of qualifying for the United Association Route 66 Nationals proved to be a marathon for both the racers and fans, as intermittent rain showers throughout the day curtailed the on-track action to a single run held late on Friday evening.
With the forecast for the Joliet area calling for even more precipitation on Saturday, Summit Racing driver Greg Anderson knew it was important to take advantage of the opportunity, and responded with a solid 6.703-second, 205.72 mph pass to sit sixth midway through qualifying.
“Today was a long and bizarre day, but this Summit Racing team hung in there through it all,” said Anderson.
“It’s the same deck of cards for everyone, so you have to make the best of every opportunity. Even though it took until late in the night, I’m glad we were finally able to make an attempt, because it gave us some valuable information. It wasn’t a great run, but I think it’s something we can build on.”
“Not surprisingly, the race track was very good. There’s never an issue with a lack of traction at this place, and without any sun on it all day long, it was even better.”
“We’d been struggling to get our engines to run in these conditions in recent races, and I think we took a step in the right direction today. If we do get to run tomorrow, we’ll work on our tune-up and see if we can get our cars to run even faster.”
