Two weeks ago at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Brown qualified his Matco Tools/U.S. Army dragster in the No. 10 position at 3.911-seconds. It was only the third time this season that Brown has qualified in the bottom half of the 16-car field. On race day, he defeated T.J. Zizzo and Mark Mariani before falling to upstart Dom Lagana in the semifinals. Brown’s second straight semifinal finish moved him to fourth in the Top Fuel standings.
Last November at the Auto Club Finals, Brown qualified his Matco Tools car fourth at 3.813 seconds at 316.15 mph. On race day, he knocked off Ers Urbacher, Brandon Bernstein, Tony Schumacher and 2009 NHRA Rookie of the Year Spencer Massey in the final round to score his category-best sixth win of the year. Brown carded a winning run of 3.801 at 316.90 to defeat Massey, who fouled at the start.
Brown is a two-time winner at the historic Southern California drag strip. He scored his third career Pro Stock Motorcycle win at the 1999 Auto Club Finals when he knocked off Craig Treble in the final round. He is the defending event champion of the NHRA season-finale defeating Spencer Massey last November. Brown has two career No. 1 qualifiers at the Pomona track, both in Top Fuel at the Winternationals. In 16 career races at Pomona, his average starting position is 6.13.
Brown, who won a category-best six races last season, enters the final race on the 2010 NHRA schedule ranked fourth in the Countdown to 1 standings. He trails two-time champion Larry Dixon by 255 points. Brown has six final-round appearances this season (Gainesville, Charlotte 1, Houston, Englishtown, Norwalk and Seattle) and five No. 1 qualifiers (Gainesville, Las Vegas 1, Topeka, Bristol and Denver). Last year, Brown had 10 finals and seven poles. His average qualifying position in 22 races this year is 4.86.
Antron Brown… Did You Know?
-Brown was a track star at Mercer College in New Jersey competing in the 100 and 200-meters, long jump, and 55-meter indoor. He ran quick enough to qualify for the U.S. Olympic trials in the 100-meters.
-Brown’s first team owner was former NFL star cornerback Troy Vincent.
-Brown is the only racer in NHRA history to win races (8 TF/16 PSM) in and lead the standings both Top Fuel and Pro Stock Motorcycle.
-Brown’s co-crew chief, Mark Oswald, won the 1984 NHRA Winston Funny Car championship. Oswald is one of 14 drivers in NHRA history to have won races in both Top Fuel and Funny Car.
-Brown’s father, Al, and uncle, Andre, race a Top Sportsman dragster in NHRA Division 1 competition.
