NHRA: Greg Anderson Claims No. 10th at Las Vegas Qualifying

Summit Racing Pro Stock driver Greg Anderson entered the second day of qualifying at the SummitRacing.com NHRA Nationals determined to build upon his opening performance from Friday. Although he was able to better his elapsed time with each run down the track, his 6.730-second, 205.22 mph best in the fourth and final session only netted him the tenth starting position for Sunday’s final eliminations. As a result, he will not have the luxury of lane choice for the first round, a distinct disadvantage.

While naturally disappointed with his uncharacteristic showing, the seven-time Las Vegas winner remained undeterred, confident that his KB Racing crew would find the proper combination to put them in contention on race day. In addition, he looked forward to receiving an assist from Mother Nature in the form of cooler temperatures.

“We certainly didn’t have the type of day we were looking for,” said Anderson. “Although my Summit Racing Pontiac made a nice run in the morning session, the engine tune up was a little off and then tonight we were just off on the set up. We’re not making the moves we want to make, but the good news is that we’re learning what not to do, which helps us zero in on what this car needs to perform.

“Fortunately, we have two teammates whose cars are running pretty well, so we’ll have plenty of data to help us figure out how to fix my car by tomorrow morning.  In addition, it’s supposed to be cooler, which could work in our favor, bringing the track to us. We don’t have lane choice, which at this track could be a problem, but, as we showed in Gainesville, we can overcome that.

“We’ve just dug ourselves a little bit of a hole, so now we just have to see how big of a shovel we can bring to the racetrack to get ourselves out of it. We’re not about to give up, we’re just going to keep trying harder and harder. Fortunately, we’ve done it before, so we know we can do it again, and the best part is that we have Ken (team owner Black) and everyone from Summit here cheering us on. I need to stay positive, and this KB Racing team needs to make the race car happy. If we do that, we’ll put ourselves in a good position to get that first pewter Wally, and I couldn’t think of a better place to do it.”
