The fond memories of his dramatic drive from eighth to second place in last year’s NHRA Countdown to the Championship Pro Stock playoffs are there as Greg Stanfield prepares for the Big O Tires NHRA Nationals, Friday through Sunday, at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
The penultimate event of the 2011 Full Throttle Series finds Stanfield in eighth place and hoping to add a positive finish to the 2011 campaign.
What better place than Las Vegas is there for Stanfield and the Nitro Fish/Coffman Tank Trucks GXP team to hit the jackpot?
“I hope we do well this weekend,” said Stanfield. “We’ve run well in our last few races at Las Vegas.”
He advanced to the semifinals in the season’s first race at The Strip in April, and last year he was runner-up at the first event and a semifinalist at the fall race.
Stanfield is eighth (2,207 points) in Full Throttle Series standings. And, like LE Tonglet, his Nitro Fish teammate and the reigning Pro Stock Motorcycle champion, Stanfield has struggled through the last half of the season. However, he is only 34 points (20 points are awarded for each round win) out of sixth place with eight competitive rounds to go. The Auto Club Finals is at Pomona, Calif., Nov. 10-13.
“I’d like to win one of the last two races,” Stanfield said. “It sure would be nice.”
“I’d like to see Greg win one of those races, too,” said Nitro Fish owner Kenny Koretsky. “I enjoy coming to Las Vegas. Winning there would be great. We’ve come close a couple of times.”
