Qualifying for the professional classes got underway on Friday at the NHRA SuperNationals, with two sessions held in ideal conditions for both the racers and the fans. As a result, the naturally-aspirated Pro Stock Cars recorded some of their quickest times of the season, much to the delight of the fans packing Old Bridge Township Raceway Park.
After pacing the 20-car field in the opening session with a 6.533-second, 211.93 mph pass, Summit Racing driver Jason Line came back in the evening session with a 6.517-second, 212.19 mph run, placing him fifth midway through the qualifying procedure.
Disappointed by his evening performance but with only seven thousandths of a second separating him from the No. 1 position, Line looked to take full advantage of his final two attempts on Saturday.
“After opening with a pretty good run in the afternoon, I wasn’t at all pleased with how we ran in the evening session,” said Line.
“We definitely left a lot on the table. Having said that, it was still good enough to get us in the top five, and we have two attempts left tomorrow to try and move up.”
“Fortunately, it will still be fast tomorrow, and my Summit Racing Pontiac is certainly capable of taking back the No. 1 spot. However, as tonight’s session showed, there are a bunch of good cars out here this weekend who will also be trying for the pole, so we’ll have our work cut out for us. Still, I think we are up to the challenge, and we’re certainly going to do whatever we can to end qualifying on top.”
