Defending Pro Stock champion Jason Line picked up right where he left off at last week’s Winternationals, posting the two quickest elapsed times on Friday at the NHRA Arizona Nationals to place his Summit Racing Pontiac atop the 18-car field midway through qualifying. After resetting the Firebird Raceway elapsed time record on his opening attempt at 6.556-seconds, he came back in the evening session to better his own mark, tripping the finish line timers in 6.553-seconds with a top speed of 210.77 to claim the provisional No. 1 position.
However, with two sessions remaining on Saturday, including one in the morning when temperatures should be cooler, Line knows his team’s work is far from done if they expect to score their second pole in as many races.
“It was a decent day for the Summit Racing team,” said Line.
“We still have some work to do to get the car where we want it to be, but we’re learning and fine-tuning it with every run. Of course, there are a lot of other cars that are also still looking to make a good run, including my teammate Greg Anderson, so it’s going to take a great run to stay on top.
“Fortunately, we have a great group of guys who are working really well together, and while I believe we will have a good chance to keep the pole, our primary focus is on race day, and getting our first win at Firebird Raceway.”
