After rain delayed the start of qualifying for the United Association Route 66 Nationals by almost seven hours, Jason Line and the Summit Racing team rolled to the line knowing this could be their only chance to qualify for Sunday’s final eliminations, as Saturday’s predicted additional precipitation could potentially eliminate the remaining two sessions.
Fortunately the KB Racing crew was up to the task, carding a 6.704-second, 205.79 mph run to claim the provisional seventh position, with the three-time Chicago winner now looking to further improve his race car’s performance if given the chance.
“On the positive side, I’m glad that we were able to make a run and put on a show for all the fans who stayed here through the rain,” said Line.
“It’s also good that we were able to go from A to B and place our Summit Racing Pontiac seventh, which would guarantee our making the field if we get washed out on Saturday. Still, I had hoped we would have run a little better than we did.
“Therefore, we’ll take the information from both Greg’s (teammate Anderson) and my cars and see what we can to do improve them if given the chance tomorrow. We know the track will be good, it’s just up to us to get the most out of it. It looks like we’ve got some homework to do.”
