Summit Racing driver Greg Anderson completed a workmanlike qualifying effort on Saturday at the Ford NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals in Bristol, Tennessee.
In three of his four attempts at Bristol Dragway, the four-time champion recorded an elapsed time in the 6.71-second range, with his best effort of 6.711 seconds which came with a top speed of 205.26 mph, earning him the sixth starting position for Sunday’s final eliminations and a first-round encounter with veteran Greg Stanfield.
Although this performance would be more than acceptable to most of the 22 cars attempting to qualify, with his race car not performing to its full potential, Anderson acknowledged that the KB Racing team had their work cut out for them heading into race day.
“It’s certainly not for a lack of trying, but we still haven’t quite found what this Summit Racing Pontiac needs,” said Anderson. “Although the times were consistent, the runs were not what we were looking for, and off the pace of the top cars, which is completely unacceptable. Unfortunately, this weekend we’ve also struggled with Jason’s car, which had been stellar all season.”
“Fortunately, the news isn’t all bad. We’re in the show, which means we have as good a chance as anyone to leave here with the win. Obviously we’re disappointed and not happy with our progress so far this weekend, but we have the rest of today and tomorrow morning to go over these cars and the data from nose to tail, figuring out what we need to turn things around. We can still make this a very good weekend – it’s just going to take a little luck and lot of work.”
