Most of the time when Pro Stock’s newest driver, Shane Gray, takes his beautiful Tire Kingdom Pontiac GXP to a racetrack on the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series schedule, it’s the first time he takes to the facility’s asphalt quarter-mile. But for an encouraging change, this week for the O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Spring Nationals at Houston Raceway Park, Gray will be on very well known ground.
The New Mexico racer is very familiar with the southern Texas racetrack. He enjoyed many weekends at the track during his Sportsman days. Just last year at this very event, Gray posted his best Competition Eliminator run of 6.94 sec. at 197.98 mph. He now hopes that his past success coupled with his comfort level at this track will translate to his Tire Kingdom Pro Stocker.
“I’m looking forward to this weekend at Houston Raceway Park,” stated Gray. It will be fun to be at a track that I’m familiar with and that holds such great memories. I made my best run in my Comp car here last year. I’ve had some great times here and I hope I can bring all those good things with me this weekend. I hope that both the comfort level I now have in my Tire Kingdom Pontiac and that I have with this track will carry over to our performance here this weekend.”
After the Four-Wide Nationals, Gray went testing and was very pleased with the results. A good handling car is important and if they can turn up the horsepower this weekend, the Tire Kingdom Pro Stocker will be the car to watch.
“We went testing after Charlotte,” explained Gray. “We made two runs with my car and they were beautiful. Now if we can find a little more power for Houston and the weather works in our favor, we should do a good job.
“We’ve got a lot of good things working for us this weekend, so with a little luck we hope to have the Tire Kingdom Pontiac near the top of the pack and racing all day Sunday.”
