In just three short years on the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series Top Fuel trail, J.R. Todd built a strong following of fans who followed the former Jr. Drag Racing League competitor all the way to five winner’s circles.
Todd began the 2009 season on the sidelines after losing his ride last year, but the popular Pro says he’s on the comeback trail and hopes to be back behind the wheel of a fuel dragster later this year.
“We’ve got a few things we’re working on,” said Todd, who was replaced in the second Lucas Oil dragster this season by Shawn Langdon. “I’m talking to a couple of teams – one for a second car and one for a team that’s currently parked – and if I can bring along a little sponsor money, they might happen.
“There are some meetings coming up in the next week or so, and if I can come up with some money, it could even happen by the next race. The other one is looking more like next year.”
Todd, who hopes to stay in Top Fuel but would consider a switch to Funny Car with the right team and right equipment, doesn’t need a lot to get back out to the track: between $500,000 and $1 million.
“We actually tried to put something together for the Vegas race, but the timing wasn’t right, but I’m still looking for something by the end of the summer and then get ready for 2010 and beyond, but right now, it’s all just about beating on doors and talking to people.”
